Quiltmaker November/December 2017The holidays evoke memories of family, friends and traditions we hold dear to our hearts. It’s always nostalgic for me as I open the boxes stored with favorite Christmas decorations—each piece I unwrap reminds me of different times in my life, places we’ve lived and stages as my boys were growing up. And I can trace the different stages of my quilting through these Christmas decorations as well.

Our Christmas stockings were made early in my quilting career—simple squares tied with yarn at each patch intersection with our names cross-stitched at the top. I hand quilted our tree skirt while pregnant with our second son. Two quilted Christmas pillows were given to me as going away presents when we moved from Texas to upstate New York. Many ornaments on our tree were made by myself or given to me as gifts from quilty friends. Each quilt or decoration holds special memories.

There are several projects in this issue that will make treasured keepsakes for years to come or delight recipients of your quilted gifts. A thoughtful hostess gift is Hot Stuff on page 22. Two holiday table runners, Sledrunner on page 38 and Celebrate! on page 64 work up quickly and would look lovely on any holiday table. Be sure to check out Star of Wonder on page 34 to set under the tree. And Margie Ullery’s Ginger Tweets on page 44 is a fun, whimsical wall quilt. Any of the patterns in this issue will make special gifts for friends, family or just for yourself.

May the spirit of the season live within all of you! It is with sincere gratitude that I thank you for keeping Quiltmaker a part of your quilting lives. Our best wishes for a magical holiday and joy and happiness in the coming year.
