Pieced in the aftermath of 9-11, the quilt top for Angela Huffman’s Patriot waited for the right time to be quilted. Angela wanted to wait until her longarming skills had developed to the right levels. A traditional design, but with unusual cornerstones and wide borders, Patriot needed to be quilted in a way that elevated the patchwork. Angela shared this quilt on episode #3206 of “Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting,” exploring foundation piecing, self-sashing patchwork, and the trapunto technique!

Using solid red and white fabrics, with just a hint of blue in the corners, gives the quilt s patriotic feel. The saturated solids create a strong color contrast, making the self-sashing stars that go right up to the border dynamic and bold.
