Announcing our latest Reader Challenge

Between summer travel and holiday chaos it can be calming for the mind to set aside some time for deliberate creative play. Our latest challenge gives you a chance to do just that and it’s bite-sized and achievable even during the summer hustle.
We challenge you to make an Artful Zippered Pouch to show off your art skills, try a new technique, or incorporate some handmade fabric, embellishments, or satisfying summer hand stitching. This pouch is a canvas to let your work shine.
We don’t mean any ole zipper pouch, mind you. Think of this creation as a mini art quilt with a zipper. Your Artful Zippered Pouch should have a zippered opening along one edge, at least one side of the pouch must feature an art quilt-like element, and it should be functional—in that items can be placed inside and the pouch zipped closed.
Take some time this summer to get back into the studio and dust off that sewing machine or hand stitch while in an Adirondack chair by the lake. Try something new and tell us about it! Please include an artist statement with your submission about your journey with this challenge. Read on for the details.

Rules

1

Create a functional zippered pouch no longer than 10″ on any edge or diameter based on the theme ‘Artful Zippered Pouch.’ Incorporate an artful element plus quilting by hand or machine on at least one side of the pouch. The finished pouch should be flat—no boxed corners—for ease of shipping. Lining is optional; we encourage the seams to be finished, however. Embellishments, if used, must not protrude more than 1/4″ from the surface of the pouch. If you use a commercial pattern, credit the designer.

2

The feature side of the pouch must be an original design and be free of any text or images protected by copyright unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you include that written permission with your submission.

3

To be considered for the challenge, attach two jpeg images of your completed pouch to an email—one of the entire pouch (feature side only), including all four of the edges, and one of a detail—by August 2, 2024 to [email protected] with ‘Artful Zippered Pouch’ in the subject line. Include in the email your name, city/state/country (if not U.S.), email address, title and dimensions of the pouch, a statement about its story—no longer than 150 words, please—plus in a closing sentence, the materials and techniques you used to create it.

4

You may submit more than one entry, but each entry must be in an individual email.

6

On August 7, 2024 we will post the finalists at quiltingdaily.com/artful-zippered-pouch-reader-challenge. Please check this post, as artists will not be notified directly.

7

If you are a finalist: Put your name and contact information on your pouch—we recommend a pinned or sewn label on the inside or back of the pouch; this will not be photographed or displayed in the magazine. For safety, place your entry in a plastic bag labeled with your name and address before packing it for shipping. We reserve the right to keep and possibly display your Artful Zippered Pouch until March 2025. Your pouch will then be returned to you.

8

Finalists’ artwork must arrive in our office by September 6, 2024.

NOTE: By submitting your Reader Challenge entry, you confirm the originality of your design and authorize Golden Peak Media to publish your pouch in an upcoming publication and promotional materials, on our websites and in other e-media, as well as possibly display it at shows and other venues. Golden Peak Media will not be held responsible for loss or damage due to circumstances beyond our control.
